Bénin–Sénégal (0-3): Gernot Rohr amer, le VAR encore dans son viseur
Defeated 3-0 by Senegal in their third Group D match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Benin's Cheetahs exit the group stage with heavy regrets. In the post-match press conference, Benin's coach, Gernot Rohr, made no secret of his disappointment, notably criticizing the VAR intervention on Senegal's first goal.
For the Franco-German coach, the match was generally interesting in terms of the play, but the final outcome remains difficult to accept. "It was an interesting match, but disappointing given the result," he said. Rohr believes the turning point came with Senegal's opening goal in the 38th minute. "On the first goal, VAR checked. There was a foul, but the referee interpreted it differently. It's hard to swallow," he lamented.
Trailing against an experienced Senegalese side, the Cheetahs were then forced to open up more. "When you're chasing the game against a team like Senegal, you expose yourself," acknowledged the coach, highlighting the quality and clinical finishing of the Lions of Teranga.
The second goal conceded was, according to him, a major blow for his team. Despite Kalidou Koulibaly's sending-off in the 71st minute, Benin hoped to get back into the game. "We thought we could score after the red card, but the opposition ultimately scored a third goal from the penalty spot," he added.
Beyond the score, Gernot Rohr believes the final result does not accurately reflect the content of the match. "I think the result doesn't reflect what happened on the pitch," he concluded.
