A true icon of English football, James Milner has officially announced the end of his professional career at the age of 40. Having reached the end of his contract with Brighton, the midfielder brings to a close an exceptional adventure spanning nearly a quarter of a century at the highest level.
Holder of the record for most Premier League appearances with 658, the former England international confirmed his decision through a message posted on social media.
"After 24 seasons in the Premier League, I think the time has come to end my playing career," he wrote, looking back on a journey that began at just 16 years old with Leeds United.
Throughout his career, Milner wore the shirts of Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton, not to mention a notable spell at Swindon Town. An exemplary player for his longevity, professionalism, and versatility, he will have left his mark on several generations of English fans.
The Leeds native retires with a prestigious record, including a Champions League title with Liverpool and three Premier League titles. In his final season, he made 22 appearances in all competitions for Brighton.
“Being able to represent all these clubs has been an incredible privilege. Each club has played a huge role in my life and career,” he concluded.
A page is therefore turning for one of the most respected and enduring players in Premier League history.
