Cameroun : Samuel Eto’o encense David Pagou et règle ses comptes avec le passé
The president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o, took advantage of a public appearance to clarify his vision regarding the management of national team coaches. When questioned about the contract extension of David Pagou, the FECAFOOT boss made a strong case for local coaches, while also launching a thinly veiled criticism of certain previous decisions.
“When the Federation finds the resources to lavishly pay a foreign coach without any tangible results, it’s only right to invest in promoting a competent Cameroonian coach,” he insisted. This statement sounds like a clear rejection of Marc Brys’s appointment, imposed at the time by the Ministry of Sports and the source of significant institutional friction.
With Pagou at the helm, Eto'o believes he has put the national team back on track. During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Indomitable Lions rediscovered their dynamism and intensity, displaying an attractive style of play despite their quarter-final elimination against Morocco. This progress was deemed sufficient to justify retaining the coach's position.
This trust was demonstrated by a symbolic reward: a year of free internet access along with a financial bonus. Beyond the gesture, Eto'o primarily wanted to send a message: in Cameroon, competence will now take precedence over the prestige and cost of coaches. This deliberate policy marks a turning point in FECAFOOT's technical approach.
