CAN 2025 : « Choqué », El-Hadji Diouf s'en remet au TAS
The controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final shows no signs of abating. Following the CAF's shocking decision to strip Senegal of the title and award it to Morocco by default (3-0), reactions from football legends continue to pour in. Interviewed this Sunday by RMC Sport on the sidelines of a FIFA event in Paris, El-Hadji Diouf broke his silence.
The former Senegalese international (69 caps) was particularly firm in his stance against what he called an "absurd" situation. For him, the victory achieved on the pitch on January 18 (1-0) takes precedence over the administrative decisions made after the fact by the African governing body.
"Senegal is the legitimate champion of Africa."
Despite the CAF's decision, prompted by the Lions' brief exit from the pitch during the final, the two-time African Footballer of the Year expresses complete confidence in the outcome of the appeal filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS): "Shocked like everyone else, but I believe things will soon return to normal. We trust the Court of Arbitration for Sport and we are confident. We know we won on the pitch, and that's what matters most. And I wanted to thank all the countries and everyone who supported us. I believe that without a doubt everyone is aware and knows that Senegal is the rightful African champion."
A celebration will still take place at the Stade de France
Proof that the Senegalese camp has no intention of relinquishing its crown, the Lions of Teranga are maintaining their celebration plans. On Saturday, March 28th, during a friendly match against Peru at the Stade de France, the players intend to celebrate their triumph with their supporters. Surprises are even planned at the Saint-Denis stadium to mark what the Senegalese consider their true victory.
