CAN-2025: Osimhen se fâche malgré la victoire des Super Eagles
Victor Osimhen, who scored twice in Nigeria's 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, angrily criticized his Nigerian teammate Ademola Lookman shortly before being substituted and boycotted the collective celebration, returning to the dressing room alone after the victory.
The scene went viral on social media, which commented on it extensively: in the 63rd minute of the match, with the Super Eagles already leading 3-0, their star Osimhen, who had scored two goals from two passes by Lookman, criticized the latter for not giving him an obvious ball and almost ended up head-to-head with his teammate.
Still very upset, the masked striker was replaced three minutes later by Paris FC player Moses Simon and he did not take part in the Nigerian group gathering on the field after the final whistle to celebrate together their qualification for the quarter-finals.
Osimhen went straight back to the locker room and, a little later, left alone and was the first to enter the mixed zone without a word to the journalists.
Already in the 9th minute of the match, he had already attacked Lookman, who he felt was already guilty of taking too long to pass him the ball, when he believed he was in a good position to shoot.
The Atalanta Bergamo striker addressed the incident after the match: "I haven't seen Osimhen yet, but I don't think it's very important. 'Vic' is our number one asset, everyone knows that, he's a great striker. So all this doesn't really matter," he downplayed.
His coach, Malian Eric Chelle, while not denying the incident, declined to elaborate: "This question concerns my management of the team and what happened on the field," he stated. "It will remain within the group. I don't need to tell you what happened or what will happen," he firmly replied to a journalist who asked him to comment on the altercation.
The Super Eagles will face in the quarter-finals the winner of the most unpredictable, and also the most anticipated, round of 16 match of the competition between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Tuesday in Rabat (5:00 pm).
