2025 AFCON: Why it almost all came down to a coin toss between Congo and Senegal

CAN 2025 : Pourquoi tout a failli se jouer à un tirage au sort entre le Congo et le Sénégal

The identity of the first team in Group D of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations remained undecided for a long time due to a close race between Senegal and Congo, which ultimately went in favour of the Lions of Teranga.

Second at kickoff, two goals behind Senegal, DR Congo managed to draw level at one point during the evening thanks to a goal from Gaël Kakuta. Had this situation persisted, it would have led to an unprecedented tiebreaker between the two nations… a coin toss. But goals from Habib Diallo and Chérif Ndiaye ultimately dashed Congolese hopes. As a reminder, the Africa Cup of Nations regulations stipulate that in the event of a tie on points between two teams at the end of the group matches, they are separated according to the following criteria, in order:

1. the highest number of points obtained in the direct confrontation;

2. the goal difference across all matches in the group;

3. the greatest number of goals scored;

4. and as a last resort, a draw is carried out by the CAF Organising Committee.

Thanks to their convincing 3-0 victory over Benin, confirmed by VAR, Senegal maintained their top spot in the group with a superior goal difference (+6 compared to +4). For their part, the Congolese created several clear-cut chances but failed to extend their lead.

A cruel scenario for the Democratic Republic of Congo

The possibility of a perfect tie – same number of points, same goal difference, same goals scored and conceded – loomed large for a long time, especially since the two teams had drawn 1-1 in their head-to-head match. In such a case, CAF regulations require a draw to determine the final standings.

Having finally won Group D, Senegal will face Sudan in the round of 16.

Il y a trop de jalousie conte les Africains. Même quand on organise notre fête du football chez nous, dans notre continent, les Européens s’en mêlent et moi, j’aîl’impression que les Africains ne gagnent pas plus d’argent que les entreprises et multinationales européennes dans cette CAN, Pourtant malgré ça, ils veulent nous annuler notre CAN et nous imposer à ce qu’elle soit organisé qu’une fois tous kes 4 ans. À mon avis, il faut refuser cela et manifester partout en Afrique.
