CAN : La CAF acte le passage à 28 équipes
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is about to reach a new milestone. Meeting this Sunday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ratified a major reform: the continental tournament will expand from 24 to 28 teams.
The announcement was made by President Patrice Motsepe following an Executive Committee meeting. This decision reflects a desire to make the competition more inclusive and representative of African football, which has been rapidly expanding in recent years.
Since 2019, the AFCON already brought together 24 nations, an expanded format which allowed several teams to discover the very highest continental level.
With 28 teams now expected, CAF is taking another step forward by offering more opportunities to emerging countries, while promising an even more competitive season.
This reform is accompanied by other adjustments to the calendar. The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be held in 2027 and will be co-hosted by three East African countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Furthermore, from 2028 onwards, the competition will adopt a four-year cycle, taking place every four years.
With these changes, CAF aims to enhance the attractiveness and competitiveness of the Africa Cup of Nations, while consolidating its place among the major international competitions. This evolution could reshape the hierarchy of African football.
