CAN Maroc 2025 : Algérie / RD Congo, Claude Le Roy fustige la programmation de la CAF
A leading figure in African football, Claude Le Roy did not mince his words ahead of the highly anticipated round of 16 match between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Present in Morocco to follow the competition, the former coach of Cameroon, Senegal, Togo and the DRC strongly criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for what he considers an inconsistency in the scheduling of the tournament.
A passionate and knowledgeable expert on continental football, the French coach protested the fact that two teams with strong group stage performances were being drawn against each other in the round of 16. Algeria, who had a perfect record with nine points in the group stage, thus find themselves facing a Congolese side that only managed seven.
“This Algeria-DRC match is infuriating me. A team with nine points is playing against another with seven points, while some teams with seven points are playing against teams with two points. The whole inconsistency of CAF…,” he denounced, pointing to a lack of sporting fairness in the system for allocating matches.
Claude Le Roy's comments have reignited the debate surrounding the format of the Africa Cup of Nations and the qualification criteria for the knockout stage. While the Algeria/DR Congo clash is certainly enticing from a sporting perspective, some observers feel it is unfair, as it seems premature at this stage of the competition.
In any case, this match promises an intense duel between two serious contenders, in an AFCON 2025 that continues to generate as much buzz on the field as off.

C'est le réglement...et maintenant même la coupe du monde a adopté à peu près le même format.
