CAN MAROC-2025 : Le capitaine du Nigeria fait une déclaration surprenante
This is what you call a bombshell. Less than three weeks before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria has suffered a major blow. Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong (32 years old, 83 caps, 8 goals) announced on Thursday that he is ending his international career. A completely unexpected decision, especially for a player who was called up for the last three international breaks and considered one of the team's leaders.
The defender for the Saudi club Al Kholood made his surprising choice official in a video posted on his social media, plunging the Nigerian national team even further into uncertainty, already weakened by its recent failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
“Wearing the Nigerian jersey is more than just football. It’s an honor. I’m at peace with my decision,” he said.
Troost-Ekong thus leaves the international scene on a memorable note: his CAN-2023 final against Ivory Coast, during which he scored a goal, and his title of Best Player of the tournament.
A symbolic and meaningful departure, which comes at a delicate time for the Super Eagles, now deprived of their historic captain on the eve of a decisive competition.
