CAN Maroc-2025 : Le Mozambique domine le Gabon et se relance
Having lost on the first day to Cameroon (1-0) and Ivory Coast (1-0), Gabon and Mozambique faced off on Sunday on the occasion of the second day, with the common objective of getting back into the race for qualification for the round of 16.
In a spectacular and high-scoring match, Mozambique defeated Gabon 3-2. In a wide-open contest, the Mambas opened the scoring through Faisal Bangal in the 37th minute. Five minutes later, following a foul by Bruno Ecuele Manga on Dominguéz, Mozambique were awarded a penalty. Gény Catamo converted the spot-kick, giving his team a two-goal lead.
In a surge of pride, Gabon managed to reduce the score before the break thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (45+5).
But at the start of the second half, the Gabonese fell back into their defensive errors and Diogo Calila took advantage to score Mozambique's third goal in the 52nd minute.
Despite Moussounda reducing the score again in the 76th minute, Mozambique managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle.
Thanks to this historic victory, the first in its history in the final phase of the AFCON, Mozambique is fully back in the race for qualification for the second round.
