CAN Maroc 2026 : entame réussie pour l’Algérie de Mahrez
It was under the watchful eye of the French legend of Algerian origin, Zinédine Zidane, that the Algerian team launched its Africa Cup of Nations campaign. Seeking their first victory after six matches without a win in the final stages of the AFCON, the Fennecs responded perfectly by dominating Sudan (3-0).
Riyad Mahrez wasted no time in leading the way for his teammates, opening the scoring in the 2nd minute. The Algerian captain beat the Sudanese goalkeeper with a precise shot after an inspired backheel from Hicham Boudaoui.
Before the break, Sudan's chances were dashed with the sending-off of Saalah Adil (39th minute), leaving his team with ten men. In the second half, Algeria capitalized on this advantage to extend their lead. Once again, Riyad Mahrez proved decisive, scoring the second goal, perfectly set up by Mohamed Amoura. The former Manchester City player gave the Sudanese goalkeeper no chance.
Technically superior and completely in control of the game, Algeria sealed the victory late in the match thanks to Ibrahim Maza (85th minute). A highly symbolic goal, as it was the 100th goal scored by the Fennecs in the Africa Cup of Nations.
In the end, Algeria, who had not won a single AFCON match since the victorious 2019 final against Senegal (1-0), made a convincing start and clearly displayed their ambitions in this tournament.
