CAN : Vers un passage à 28 équipes, l’annonce phare de Motsepe
The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has announced his intention to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to 28 teams. This major reform would mark a new stage in the evolution of the continent's most prestigious football competition.
The announcement was made this Friday during the CAF executive committee meeting, held in Dar es Salaam.
Currently contested by 24 nations, the AFCON could, in future editions, welcome four additional teams.
According to Patrice Motsepe, this expansion responds to an ambition to strengthen the competitiveness of the tournament while offering a greater number of countries the opportunity to experience the biggest event in African football.
The increase from 16 to 24 teams in 2019 had already marked a turning point in the history of the competition, allowing new nations to emerge on the continental stage.
However, this reform also raises logistical and organizational challenges, particularly in terms of infrastructure, international scheduling and economic profitability.
The CAF will therefore have to reconcile sporting ambition with operational viability.
