Chants racistes pendant Espagne-Egypte: enquête ouverte, une "honte" pour le gouvernement
Catalan police announced on Wednesday the opening of an investigation into "Islamophobic and xenophobic chants" sung the previous day during the friendly football match between Spain and Egypt in Barcelona, Catalonia, in northeastern Spain.
The match, which took place in the La Cornella stadium, home of Espanyol Barcelona, was marred by racist chants ("Whoever doesn't jump is a Muslim!") sung by a group of Spanish supporters.
At halftime, a message was displayed on the giant screens, reminding everyone that the law "prohibits and punishes active participation in violent, xenophobic, homophobic or racist acts".
"We are investigating the Islamophobic and xenophobic chants from yesterday at the RCDE Stadium during the friendly match between Spain and Egypt" (0-0), Catalan police told X on Wednesday.
"The racist insults and chants shame us as a society," denounced Justice Minister Félix Bolaños, also on X.
"The far right will leave no space free for its hatred and those who remain silent today will be complicit," he accused, assuring that the left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez "continues to work for a country that is tolerant and respectful of everyone."
The Spanish Football Federation said on Tuesday evening that it "condemns all acts of violence in stadiums" and "joins the message of football against racism".
Its president, Rafael Louzán, referred to "isolated" chants which "must not be repeated".
In the post-match press conference, Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente said he felt "total and absolute disgust at any xenophobic, racist or disrespectful attitude", denouncing "intolerable" chants and calling for their authors to be "identified" and punished.
"We all need to work together to eradicate racist chants from football pitches," midfielder Pedri told reporters. "We don't like it."
Despite the efforts of the authorities and several court convictions, Spanish football still cannot eradicate racism in its stadiums and on the pitch.
Real Madrid's Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, who has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in the world of football, has been the most frequent target since his arrival in Madrid in 2018. But only some of these incidents have led to sanctions.
Spain will host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, alongside Portugal and Morocco.
