Compétitions africaines de clubs : Week-end noir pour le football sénégalais

Senegalese football has suffered a major blow on the continental stage. Last weekend, both of the country's representatives in African club competitions were eliminated, putting an end to any Senegalese ambitions in the opening rounds.

On Saturday, Génération Foot opened the black series, being surprised by AFAD of Côte d'Ivoire (5-3) in the first round of the CAF Cup. The academy, although accustomed to playing leading roles on the national stage, was unable to confirm its strength on the continental stage.

On Sunday, it was Jaraaf Dakar who fell. After earning an encouraging 0-0 draw in Yaoundé, the Medina team lost 1-0 at the Lat Dior stadium in Thiès to Colombe Sportive of Cameroon. A painful elimination for a club that had genuine ambitions of reaching the Champions League group stage.

These early exits have reignited the debate about the level of competitiveness of Senegalese clubs in African competitions. While national teams, in all categories, regularly shine by winning trophies, domestic clubs struggle to compete on the continental stage. Too often, they are eliminated in the first or second round, sometimes even by opponents deemed approachable.

Several factors explain these poor performances. Among them, the lack of a well-managed schedule: the national championship is often slow to start, which impacts the preparation of clubs, which often approach the qualifiers without competition. Added to this is the regular loss of key players, who leave to monetize their talents elsewhere, thus weakening the squads involved in these demanding competitions.

Faced with this alarming situation, an in-depth analysis is required. Repeated eliminations should not only cause disappointment, but also push Senegalese football authorities to find lasting solutions.

This is the price that local football will have to pay to compete with the best teams on the continent and restore its reputation in interclub competitions.
