Congrès de la Fifa: un dirigeant palestinien refuse une photo avec un dirigeant israélien (vidéo)
The president of the Palestinian Football Federation, Jibril Rajoub, refused to shake hands and appear in a photo with Israeli football official Basim Sheikh Suliman during a tense moment at the FIFA Congress on Thursday in Vancouver, Canada.
After the two leaders addressed the delegates from the stands, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino invited them both to pose with him.
Jibril Rajoub refused the invitation several times despite the insistence of the FIFA president.
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) recently filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following FIFA's refusal to sanction Israel for its clubs located in illegal settlements in the West Bank.
The West Bank, a Palestinian territory plagued by daily violence, has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
The PFA believes that these clubs should not be allowed to participate in competitions organized by the Israeli federation.
In October 2024, several United Nations experts – mandated by the Human Rights Council but not speaking on behalf of the UN – urged FIFA to "respect international law" on this specific point.
According to these experts, "at least eight football clubs have developed or have been identified as playing in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank."
When questioned by journalists, Mr. Rajoub asked the world football governing body "to apply its statutes with fairness and logic".
"What is happening in Palestine is horrific, the destruction of all the sports facilities in Gaza, the murders of hundreds of Palestinian athletes, employees... It is time for justice."
"The person speaking on behalf of Israel wasn't even paying attention to all this suffering, to what was happening."
"I refused to shake his hand. How could I have taken a picture with such a person?", he added.
