Manchester United were eliminated on penalties in the second round of the English League Cup on Wednesday by fourth-tier Grimsby Town.
The small club from the east coast of England achieved the greatest feat in its history against a Manchester side completely out of it in the first half and leading 2-0 after the 30th minute.
Ruben Amorin's men bounced back after the break. Grimbsy goalkeeper Christy Pym made a few high-flying saves to hold the score for a long time, but Cameroonian international Bryan Mbeumo (2-1, 75th) and the tireless Harry Maguire in extremis (2-2, 89th) brought Manchester back to level.
Without extra time, the penalty shootout ended in suspense, ending 12-11 for Grimbsy when Mbeumo sent his shot onto the bar.
