Coupe du monde 2026 : bonne nouvelle pour l’arbitre somalien Omar Artan
Despite his forced absence from the 2026 World Cup, Somali referee Omar Artan can count on FIFA's support. Turned away upon arrival in the United States after being detained for several hours by US immigration services, the 2025 African Referee of the Year will ultimately be unable to participate in the tournament.
Although he possessed a diplomatic passport and a valid visa, Omar Artan was denied entry to the United States. Forced to return to Somalia, he received a warm welcome from his compatriots, who praised his achievements and professionalism.
According to reports from the BBC, FIFA has decided to pay him all the compensation and bonuses he would have received during the competition. This decision demonstrates the world governing body's confidence in the Somali official, considered one of the most promising referees on the African continent.
This unfortunate incident, however, does not tarnish his reputation on the international stage. Indeed, UEFA has entrusted him with the refereeing of the UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on August 12th in Salzburg. This prestigious appointment confirms the recognition Omar Artan enjoys at the highest level of world football.
For the Somali referee, this difficult episode could quickly give way to a new opportunity to shine on the European stage.
