Coupe du monde 2026 : La FIFA rejette une demande de Donald Trump
According to the Financial Times, US President Donald Trump reportedly proposed to FIFA President Gianni Infantino that Italy replace Iran as the host nation. El Pais reports that this request was rejected by the world football governing body.
At war with Israel and the United States for several weeks before a ceasefire, Iran cast doubt on its participation in the 2026 World Cup, where its three group matches are scheduled to be played in the United States. As an alternative to Iran, the American president reportedly proposed Italy, eliminated by Bosnia in the European playoffs. According to the Financial Times, it was Paolo Zampolli, an advisor to the American president, who suggested Italy to Infantino because of the prestige the country represents in the World Cup, having won four titles.
However, this idea was rejected by FIFA. The governing body wants to ensure respect and recognition for the Iranians, who qualified on the field. According to El Pais, even Italy reportedly refused this proposal from Donald Trump's camp.
