Code disciplinaire, arbitrage, VAR : Les annonces fortes de Patrice Motsepe
The tone is firm. This Friday, January 30, 2026, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, published a statement aimed at reassuring partners and football enthusiasts about the future of sports governance in Africa.
Deeply affected by the violence that erupted during the recent Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, the CAF president announced major internal legislative measures. The objective is clear: to strengthen the organization's legal framework to prevent any recurrence.
"I have convened a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee (COMEX) to review CAF regulations, including the Disciplinary Code. This review aims to ensure that CAF's judicial bodies have sufficient powers to impose appropriate and dissuasive sanctions."
While recalling his respect for the independence of the Disciplinary Commission, whose latest decisions were handed down on January 28, Patrice Motsepe stresses that the integrity of the competition is non-negotiable.
Refereeing and VAR: the quest for excellence
Another major aspect of his statement concerns refereeing. Aware of the regular criticism, the CAF president is counting on a technical and financial upgrade to place African officials at the top of the world rankings. "We are determined to allocate additional financial resources as well as enhanced technical expertise to ensure that the quality [...] of African referees, VAR operators, and match commissioners is comparable to that of the best in the world."
Patrice Motsepe also stressed the importance of the public perception of these actors, stating that they must be "recognized as impartial, fair and world-class".
Despite recent tensions, the president remains optimistic about the overall trajectory of African football. He reiterates his determination, shared by the 54 member associations, to proudly represent the continent on the international stage.
"I am convinced that with the additional reforms and far-reaching measures we are putting in place, African football and CAF competitions will continue to be respected, admired, and among the best in the world."
