Dual nationals: Rafael van der Vaart harshly criticizes the Moroccan model

Binationaux : Rafael van der Vaart tacle sévÚrement le modÚle marocain

While Morocco continues to establish itself as a rising force in world football, thanks in particular to the contributions of its diaspora, Rafael van der Vaart's comments have reignited the debate surrounding dual-nationality national teams. Appearing on a Dutch television program, the former Real Madrid attacking midfielder didn't hesitate to downplay the progress of the Atlas Lions, arguing that the Netherlands had nothing to fear from a potential encounter at the 2026 World Cup.

Since their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, Morocco has earned the respect of the football world, to the point of now being considered among the credible contenders for the world title. An analysis that Van der Vaart clearly doesn't share. According to him, the Moroccan national team primarily benefits from players who haven't managed to establish themselves with the Netherlands. "The only one I would have wanted to see with us is Hakim Ziyech," he stated, before asserting that the Oranje would have no reason to fear Morocco in a major tournament.

These strong statements contrast sharply with the Dutch team's recent performances, which have often been inconsistent on the international stage. Having been eliminated early from Euro 2020 and then knocked out in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, the Netherlands are struggling to regain their former glory.

Beyond the controversy, Van der Vaart's comments primarily reignite the debate surrounding the selection of dual-nationality players. While some talented players have indeed chosen Morocco due to a lack of opportunities in the Netherlands, others clearly deserved a place in the Oranje squad. Players like Noussair Mazraoui and Sofyan Amrabat exemplify this reality, as did Karim El Ahmadi and Mbark Boussoufa in the past.

While history has already seen some dual nationals favour the Netherlands, like Khalid Boulahrouz or Ibrahim Afellay, the trend now seems to be reversing with more and more young players born and trained in the Netherlands choosing to defend the colours of Morocco.

Behind Van der Vaart's controversial statement, it is therefore the rise of Morocco and its growing attractiveness to talents from the diaspora that continues to be debated in Europe.
