El Hadji Diouf, Coly, Bouba Diop… : Pape Thiaw se souvient de la douleur de Lens
On the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations, European clubs employing eligible African players are unhappy. Many are reluctant to part with their players for the duration of the African competition. And this is nothing new.
“I remember, in our time in 2002, Lens lost the championship [on the last day] for having played without El Hadji Diouf, Ferdinand Coly and the late Pape Bouba Diop [who had gone to the AFCON],” recalls the national coach, Pape Thiaw, when asked about the subject this Thursday at the press conference announcing the list of Lions for the November FIFA window.
But the coach, quoted by Record, was quick to add: "It's football, and FIFA decides. We have a competition, the AFCON, and we respect it. It's important to us. These players must be there for their country, even if they are paid by their clubs. Football has rules that must be respected."
