With the 2026 World Cup just months away, the future of the French national team's coaching staff already seems to be taking shape internally. While Didier Deschamps is expected to step down after the World Cup, the French Football Federation hasn't waited to plan for his successor.
In an interview with Le Figaro, the president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, confirmed that a name had already been chosen to succeed him. "Yes, I know his name," he confided, while refusing to reveal it publicly. He did, however, specify that he was looking for someone capable of uniting and rallying support around the national team.
Unsurprisingly, one name stands out: Zinedine Zidane. The former French captain, a free agent since leaving Real Madrid, appears to be the natural favorite to succeed Deschamps. His experience at the highest level and his influence with the players make him a credible and widely expected candidate.
When asked more specifically about this hypothesis, Philippe Diallo remained evasive, preferring to postpone any official announcement until after the World Cup: "I'll see you at the end of the 2026 World Cup," he said.
Meanwhile, the French team remains focused on its upcoming challenges. But behind the scenes, the transition already seems well underway.
