Équipe nationale du Maroc : Le vestiaire a tenté de convaincre Walid Regragui de rester
Walid Regragui's departure from the Atlas Lions coaching position is expected to be officially announced this Thursday by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). This outcome was anticipated for the coach, who had already expressed his desire to leave his post after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
According to information from "L'Équipe", the Moroccan coach, worn down by three and a half years at the helm of the Atlas Lions, had submitted his resignation after the defeat against Senegal in Rabat (1-0 aet), on January 18.
Faced with this decision, the team's management and staff tried to persuade him to reconsider. Several influential players in the locker room contacted him personally to encourage him to continue playing.
But their efforts were not enough to sway the coach, who was determined to move on. Those close to him also felt that the time had come to change course.
Aware that it could not retain a coach against his will, the FRMF nevertheless delayed making this departure official, taking the time to explore several options for his successor.
Among them was the one leading to Xavi, who was contacted to take over as national team coach. However, the former FC Barcelona coach declined the offer, preferring not to commit before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
For the time being, an internal solution is expected, with Mohamed Ouahbi, a U20 World Cup winner in October, tipped to take over as interim manager. This option has become the obvious choice, as the name of Tarik Sektioui, despite being supported by some fans, is seen as more of a long-term project.
