Tottenham beat Everton 3-0 at home in the ninth round of Premier League fixtures last Sunday. Pape Matar Sarr sealed the victory with a header that gave Jordan Pickford, the Toffees' goalkeeper, no chance. But unexpectedly, the Senegalese international didn't celebrate his goal. Despite the enthusiasm of his teammates, who rushed to congratulate him, he remained composed, too composed for someone who usually celebrates his goals with bursts of joy.
What explains this attitude? Walfadjri sought to find out more about the reasons for Sarr's great restraint. It has nothing to do with a desire to spare his compatriots, Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye, his opponents for the evening. The explanation lies in his new status at Spurs: substitute. The Lion, in fact, scored his goal (89th minute) after coming off the bench eleven minutes earlier.
As Walf points out, Pape Matar Sarr has not been a regular starter for the past five matchdays, despite being in the starting eleven for the first four English league games. He is not happy with this change and has made his displeasure known.
This hasn't escaped the notice of former Tottenham midfielder turned pundit, Jamie O'Hara. "The fact that Sarr didn't celebrate his goal tells me that his current status has really affected him. He's not happy," he stated on thelaneandback.com , in comments reported by the newspaper.
O'Hara continued: "It makes me sad. He needs to be on the pitch from the start (of the game). He's been exceptional this season. When someone who's been exceptional this season is benched, you have to manage the way you talk to him. Sarr has been fantastic this season. He's shown his qualities in that box-to-box role."
But according to Walf, Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is leaving Pape Matar Sarr out of the squad for a reason other than a purely technical one: he is reportedly preparing for the Senegalese player's departure for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (December 21, 2025 - January 18, 2026), which will see him miss seven Premier League matches. "So Spurs would be wise to get used to the 23-year-old's absence," agrees TBR Football.
