[EXCLUSIF] Pape Thiaw sans contrat ni salaire depuis février
As the Senegalese national team departs for the United States on Wednesday evening to begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup, the situation of Pape Thiaw raises questions. According to exclusive information from Seneweb, the Senegalese coach has not received a salary since February, just weeks after the hard-fought victory against Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. For the past four months, Pape Thiaw has been working without any legal basis.
In just over two weeks, Pape Thiaw is preparing to lead Senegal in a second major tournament. Adored by the nation and officially confirmed in his position by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) after the historic victory in Morocco, the coach fully intends to make history at the World Cup in the United States. "If I had the slightest doubt about my ability to bring home the World Cup, I would have resigned as coach," the national team manager declared a few weeks ago.
An African champion on the bench under the status of a mere "service provider"
But beyond the displayed confidence and ambitious projections of the technical staff, the national team coach's contractual situation is far less rosy. For months, Pape Thiaw has been working without any legal protection. Last February, exactly one month after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final victory against Morocco, his employment contract expired. According to exclusive information obtained by Seneweb, the African champion coach has still not renewed his contract with the Senegalese Football Federation and, consequently, has not received a single salary since February. On the eve of the 2026 World Cup, which officially kicks off on June 14 for the Lions with a clash against France, the reigning African champions risk having a mere "service provider" on their bench.
As a reminder, a few days before the start of the final phase, the president of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), Abdoulaye Fall, had set a victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the primary and non-negotiable objective. "According to the terms of the contract, Pape Thiaw must win the AFCON," he stated publicly at the time. A mission that the coach accomplished brilliantly by bringing home the second star, in addition to having brilliantly qualified Senegal for the 2026 World Cup, whose on-field preparations officially begin this Sunday with a friendly match against the United States.
