The election for the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) has seen its first twists and turns. Shabani Nonda, a declared candidate, ultimately withdrew from the race after his application was rejected by the electoral commission.

About ten days after submitting his application, the former captain of the Leopards (21 caps, 14 goals) had his candidacy rejected due to administrative irregularities. The former AS Monaco striker is thus on the list of rejected applicants, alongside Aziz Makukula, Kévin Issa, Jean-Claude Mukanya, Patrice Mangenda, and Max Mayaka. The commission cited the "absence" of certain documents or a "lack of evidence" to justify these decisions.

Conversely, only three candidates were shortlisted: Bosco Muehu, Jean-Didier Massamba, and, most notably, Véron Mosengo-Omba, considered the frontrunner. The former Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football enjoys significant political support.

Rejected candidates still have the option to rectify the situation or appeal to the relevant commission. But for Shabani Nonda, that chapter is already closed. In a statement, the former striker officially announced his withdrawal:

 

"It is with deep sadness that I announce, for personal reasons, my decision to withdraw my candidacy for the presidency of Fecofa. This decision does not diminish my gratitude to all those who have accompanied me on this journey. The support of the Congolese people, the diaspora, and the encouragement of those involved in football will remain a tremendous honor for me."

 

This withdrawal reshuffles the cards of an election now dominated by Véron Mosengo-Omba, in a context where the governance of Congolese football remains a major issue after the Leopards' qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
