Lutte contre le racisme : Vinícius Jr veut faire équipe avec Lamine Yamal
Racism continues to tarnish the image of European football. The latest episode: anti-Muslim chants heard during the Spanish national team's training camp, which deeply shocked the young Barcelona striker, Lamine Yamal.
Sensitive to the situation, Vinícius Júnior, who is regularly subjected to racist insults in stadiums, wanted to offer his support and encourage him to get involved in this fight.
Even though he wasn't directly targeted, Yamal, a Spanish international of Moroccan origin, was deeply affected by the atmosphere at the RCDE Stadium, home of Espanyol Barcelona, during the friendly match between Spain and Egypt (0-0). Chants hostile to Islam, notably the slogan "He who doesn't jump is a Muslim," sparked outrage and unease.
On his social media, Yamal, a Muslim, firmly condemned these behaviors: he recalled his belonging to the Muslim religion and denounced the use of faith as a motive for provocation and hatred contrary to the values of football.
His message quickly resonated, including with his Madrid rival. Vinícius Júnior, who has been campaigning against racism for several years, praised the young Spaniard's speech. He encouraged him to continue along this path and to join forces to combat this scourge.
"It's a difficult subject, but it comes up often. It's important that Lamine speaks out, because it can inspire other people," he said.
The Brazilian also emphasized the responsibility of top-level players, aware of their media influence. According to him, their fame allows them to better cope with these situations, unlike other, less visible victims. He therefore called for collective solidarity to combat all forms of discrimination, in Europe and elsewhere.
This stance was also praised by Rio Ferdinand. The former England defender lauded Yamal's courage and maturity, pointing out that at just 18 years old, he is already transcending his status as a footballer to become a committed voice.
"He's not just a player, he's a young man who dares to say no to racism and disrespect," he commented.
Through this episode, Lamine Yamal confirms that he embodies much more than just a talented player for FC Barcelona. By speaking out firmly, he joins Vinícius Júnior in a crucial fight: that of a more respectful and inclusive football.
