Finale CAN-2025 perdue : Le Maroc refuse de tourner la page et prépare une contre-attaque
A month after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, won by Senegal (1-0 after extra time), tensions remain high on the Moroccan side. Defeated on home soil on January 18, 2026, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) continues to contest the decisions and sanctions imposed following the match.
Meeting this Thursday, it detailed its response to the sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Deeming the disciplinary measures against it "unfair" and too lenient towards Senegal, the Moroccan body intends to pursue the battle in the legal arena.
In an official statement, the FRMF announced the upcoming holding of an extraordinary meeting dedicated exclusively to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The organization specified that the legal proceedings relating to the incidents that marred the final are still ongoing.
The federation affirms its intention to continue defending its interests "through approved legal channels and procedures," with the stated objective of preserving "the foundations and regulations of football." This is a clear way of indicating that the matter is far from closed on the Moroccan side.
As a reminder, the match was briefly interrupted after Morocco was awarded a penalty, a decision that sparked fierce protests from the Senegalese side. Clashes broke out in the stands, leading to disturbances.
Last week, 18 Senegalese supporters were sentenced to prison terms following these incidents.
Unlike its Moroccan counterpart, the Senegalese federation has decided not to appeal the sanctions imposed by CAF. This decision has been interpreted as a desire to de-escalate the situation, especially since some alarmist scenarios suggested a possible withdrawal of the trophy or exclusion from the 2026 World Cup.
Ultimately, the Lions retained their continental title, but the aftermath of this electrifying final continues to fuel tensions between the two federations.
With the conviction of 18 Senegalese supporters and this statement from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, the legal saga may only be beginning.
