The New York Knicks made a huge statement in Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 on their home court. Trailing by 14 points in the second half and still down by one with two minutes remaining, the Knicks unleashed a devastating 11-0 run that proved fatal for the Spurs, securing their 12th consecutive playoff victory. It was a masterclass in composure that sent a chill through the Frost Bank Center.

Visually, the atmosphere was electric, with the arena divided into sections of different colors—blue, orange, and neon pink—thanks to the t-shirts distributed to spectators according to their seats. While the Spurs fans were particularly vocal in their support of their team, the real feat came from the large contingent of Knicks fans. Entering the arena very early, as soon as the doors opened, the supporters from New York managed to make their voices heard amidst the Texas frenzy, at times even louder than the home fans.

Among them was actor Timothée Chalamet, a regular in the front row at Madison Square Garden, who traveled to Texas and is following the team on the road for almost all of their playoff away games. Knicks fans are going absolutely wild, chanting over and over in the concourses: "53 years without a title, we need this so badly!"

This incredible fervor made a lasting impression, starting with coach Mike Brown who was keen to acknowledge the vocal support: "It's awesome. Our fans have been fantastic, they've been great on the road. And seeing them all over San Antonio, hearing them in the arena... It's so great to hear their chants like this."

Captain Jalen Brunson also emphasized this significant support after his heroic 30 points: "Knowing we're on the road, and knowing our fans and my teammates have my back, is the greatest strength in an environment like this. Mutual trust is what has brought us this far."

For many of these fans, this trip was an almost obvious financial decision. When questioned in the arena corridors, one confided that they had paid $1,200 for a ticket that, at Madison Square Garden, would easily have cost $5,000. For these enthusiasts, the net savings on the ticket were close to 75% to 80%. Even adding the cost of airfare and hotel stays in San Antonio, the trip remains far more cost-effective than trying to attend a game in Manhattan.

This sea of blue, pink, and orange created a striking contrast with the atmosphere outside. The city of San Antonio appeared strangely calm and silent after this opening defeat; the usual Finals excitement had not yet fully taken hold in the Texas streets, where Knicks fans displayed absolute confidence.

The tension and excitement of the event reached their peak in the fourth quarter with a completely surreal incident. A spectator managed to evade security and storm the court, phone in hand, with the sole purpose of taking a selfie with Victor Wembanyama during the game, when the Knicks were only leading by six points. When asked about this intrusion, which briefly interrupted the game, the Spurs superstar didn't hide his astonishment: "I've never been in that situation. I didn't really know how to react."

Despite the enthusiastic support of the home crowd and Wembanyama's performance, limited to a disappointing 6-for-21 shooting by the Knicks' physical defense, San Antonio faltered in the final moments. Karl-Anthony Towns perfectly summed up New York's mindset after this comeback: "Tonight, our offense wasn't there at the start, but our defense held firm from the first minute. That's what saved us. It was a real boxing match, and it's only the first round."

Now, all the pressure rests on the Spurs' shoulders. For Game 2, still in San Antonio, the Texans can't afford any more mistakes. Losing a second consecutive home game before flying to New York down 0-2 would be tantamount to throwing in the towel. This next game is already shaping up to be explosive, a pure question of survival for the Spurs against the irresistible momentum of the New Yorkers.
