The Spanish media outlet reports comments made by the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, on Iranian state television: "Given what happened today and this attack by the United States, it is unlikely that we can calmly consider the World Cup, but it is the sports authorities who must decide." The official also announced the suspension of the domestic league until further notice.

Having qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup finals, Iran is in Group G of the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The team will play all three of its group matches in the United States: against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles, against Belgium on June 21, also in Los Angeles, and against Egypt on June 26 in Seattle.
FIFA says it is closely monitoring the situation
Earlier in the day, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström indicated that the international governing body was closely monitoring the situation. "I read the news (concerning Iran) this morning, as did you," he said at the International Football Association Board's annual general meeting in Cardiff, Wales, according to ESPN. "We held a meeting today and it is premature to comment in detail, but we will be closely following developments on all issues around the world. We will continue to communicate, as we always do, with the three host governments. Everyone's safety will be ensured," he assured.
