Foot: le Real Madrid et l'UEFA annoncent avoir trouvé un accord "pour le bien du football européen"
In dispute over the Super League, a controversial project to rival the Champions League, Real Madrid and UEFA jointly announced on Wednesday that they had reached an agreement "for the good of European football".
The Spanish giant, whose president Florentino Pérez was the last defender, and the promoter of the Super League, A22 Sports Management, threatened to claim more than $4 billion in damages from UEFA, the governing body of European football, accused of having torpedoed the project in 2021.
"UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC) and Real Madrid CF have reached an agreement for the good of European football," Real Madrid and UEFA wrote in their respective statements.
"This agreement in principle will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once these principles have been executed and implemented," they stated.
This announcement, which comes a few days after FC Barcelona withdrew, could put a definitive end to the European Super League project, initially launched by 12 major European clubs in 2021, but which had been forced to evolve its proposal under the weight of immense pressure from supporters and institutions.
