Foot: Ronaldo devient l'unique meilleur buteur de l'histoire des qualifications du Mondial
Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo became the top scorer in World Cup qualifying history on Tuesday, aged 40, scoring his 40th and 41st goals against Hungary.
Ronaldo had previously shared the title of top scorer in qualifying with Guatemala's Carlos Ruiz, who scored 39 goals in qualifying over an international career that spanned from 1998 to 2016.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the match, turning in a tight cross from the right by Nelson Semedo from six yards. He doubled the lead from the penalty spot in added time of the first half (45+3).
He was substituted in the 78th minute, when Portugal were leading 2-1 and thought they had secured their place in the 2026 World Cup.
But the Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai dashed Portuguese hopes by equalizing in added time (2-2, 90+1) pushing back the deadline for a possible Portuguese qualification.
