Foot: Xabi Alonso nommé entraîneur de Chelsea
The 44-year-old Spaniard Xabi Alonso has been appointed Chelsea manager on a four-year contract, which will begin on July 1, the English Premier League club officially announced on Sunday.
Chelsea have just lost the FA Cup final 1-0 against Manchester City and are in 9th place in the league, outside the places qualifying for European competitions, with two matchdays remaining in the season.
The Blues parted ways with Italian Enzo Maresca in early January and then Englishman Liam Rosenior in April, and each time they turned to Calum McFarlane to take over as interim manager.
Xabi Alonso will return to a job in early July after being dismissed from Real Madrid in January, eight months after joining the Spanish giant.
As a coach, Xabi Alonso led Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, going undefeated in an incredible 2023-2024 season and winning the German Cup along the way. He joined Kylian Mbappé's Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, but did not have the opportunity to achieve the same level of success there.
He becomes the sixth permanent coach since Chelsea came under the control of the American group BlueCo in May 2022, including Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Maresca and Rosenior.
As a player, Xabi Alonso notably distinguished himself with another English club, Liverpool, by winning the famous 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan. He also won the competition with Real Madrid in 2014.
