Football : la Fédération irlandaise réclame la suspension d’Israël des compétitions européennes
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) announced on Saturday that its members had overwhelmingly voted in favour of an official request to UEFA: to immediately suspend the Israeli Football Association from all European competitions.
A resolution adopted by a large majority
Proposed by Bohemian FC, one of the most influential clubs in the country, the resolution was adopted by 74 votes to 7, with two abstentions.
The text accuses the Israeli Federation of two alleged violations of UEFA statutes:
its inability to implement an effective anti-racist policy;
the presence of Israeli clubs in the occupied Palestinian territories without the agreement of the Palestinian Football Federation.
The FAI clarified that this approach was aimed at pushing UEFA to officially investigate these shortcomings.
A context of increasing pressure on UEFA
When contacted, UEFA did not immediately respond to this request.
The European Union had, however, considered holding a vote in early October on a possible suspension of Israel due to the conflict in Gaza. According to sources cited by Reuters, these discussions were put on hold after a US-brokered ceasefire came into effect on October 10.
An international movement that is gaining momentum
The Irish stance adds to those of the Turkish and Norwegian federations, which in September called on FIFA and UEFA to ban Israel from international competitions.
These calls come amid a tense climate, marked by the conclusions of a UN investigative report accusing Israel of committing genocide during the Gaza war. Following these conclusions, several UN experts urged world football governing bodies to suspend Israel.
