The Tunisian national team has received a significant boost. Defensive midfielder Rani Khedira, a Union Berlin player and younger brother of former German international Sami Khedira, has officially decided to represent Tunisia on the international stage.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) announced that FIFA had given its approval for the 32-year-old player's change of sporting affiliation.

Trained in Germany and having played for their youth teams, Rani Khedira was never called up to the senior German national team. This situation therefore allowed him to switch national teams.

The FTF welcomed the favorable outcome of the case, stressing that this decision is the result of work carried out by its leaders, but also of the player's desire to defend the colors of his parents' country of origin.

A boost of experience for Tunisia

With this confirmation, Rani Khedira is now immediately eligible to wear the Carthage Eagles jersey. The midfielder thus becomes an additional option for coach Sabri Lamouchi, as the 2026 World Cup approaches.

Accustomed to the challenges of the Bundesliga, the former RB Leipzig and FC Augsburg player will bring his experience and solidity to the Tunisian midfield, in a context where the national team is looking to strengthen its squad before the upcoming international fixtures.

A divisive decision

Despite the federation's enthusiasm, the player's arrival is not universally welcomed in Tunisia. Some observers recall that he had declined an initial offer from the national team in 2018. At the time, he explained that he did not speak Arabic or French and did not know the national team players well.

This change of heart has drawn criticism from some, who accuse the midfielder of opportunism. Others, however, believe that his experience at the highest European level could be a significant asset for the Carthage Eagles in the years to come.
