Royston Drenthe, 38, suffered a stroke on Friday and was subsequently hospitalized. A retired players' group, FC De Rebellen, announced the incident on social media.

Former Real Madrid and Feyenoord Rotterdam winger Royston Drenthe has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, FC De Rebellen, a group of former Dutch and Belgian footballers to which the 38-year-old belongs, announced on Sunday.

In their Instagram post announcing the stroke on Friday, they assured that Drenthe "is receiving good care and is in good hands." "The team and everyone involved hope for a speedy recovery. Royston's family requests that his peace and privacy be respected during this time so that we can offer him the support and space necessary for his recovery," his loved ones added in the same post.

A Dutch international once in 2010, Drenthe, retired since 2023, had also played in England (Everton, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday) in Türkiye and Russia in particular.
