France national team coach Didier Deschamps unveiled the list of players called up to face Azerbaijan and Iceland in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Thursday. Faced with numerous absences, the French national team boss has had to adapt.
Jean-Philippe Mateta will be making his debut with the French national team. After a successful return to action against Ukraine (2-0) and Iceland (2-1), the French team will continue its run in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Iceland on October 10 and 13, 2025.
This Thursday, France coach Didier Deschamps unveiled his squad for these two matches. And as expected, the French coach had to adapt due to numerous absences.
The guards don't move
As in September, the French coach has decided to renew his faith in the same goalkeeping trio: Mike Maignan, Lucas Chevalier, and Brice Samba. On the wings, Jules Koundé and Malo Gusto have retained DD's trust on the right. On the left wing, Lucas Digne and Théo Hernandez are also continuing.
In the center, the former Olympique de Marseille coach can count on the return of William Saliba, who was out of the last training camp. Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konaté, and Lucas Hernandez are still present. The biggest loser is Benjamin Pavard, who took advantage of Saliba's injury in September to return to the Blues.
Mateta's big premiere!
In midfield, the French boss must do without Aurélien Tchouaméni, suspended after his red card against Iceland. While Manu Koné, Adrien Rabiot, and Khéphren Thuram are still present, Eduardo Camavinga is taking advantage of the situation to make his comeback.
Finally, on the offensive side, Deschamps lamented the absences of Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Rayan Cherki, and Marcus Thuram. Around captain Kylian Mbappé, we find Bradley Barcola, Michael Olise, Hugo Ekitike and Maghnes Akliouche, but also Christopher Nkunku and especially Jean-Philippe Mateta. Performing well with Crystal Palace, the 28-year-old striker thus receives his first call-up to the Blues.
