"Il a voulu être le super-héros" : Le tacle de Romain Saïss à Brahim Diaz après la finale de la CAN
Several months after Morocco's loss to Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final (0-1 after extra time), Brahim Diaz's failed Panenka penalty attempt continues to be a topic of discussion. Former Atlas Lions captain Romain Saïss admits he still hasn't gotten over the mistake, which could have changed the course of the match.
In an interview with Colinterview, the Moroccan defender reflected on this decisive action. He admitted to being completely surprised by his teammate's decision at the time.
“I thought to myself, ‘He didn’t do that, did he?’ I turned around, put my head in my hands, and thought, ‘He didn’t dare do that.’ You can miss a penalty, especially in an Africa Cup of Nations final. It’s part of football. Achraf Hakimi has already missed one at an important moment, Hakim Ziyech too. They took it normally and we moved on,” he explained.
However, the attempt at a panenka penalty at such a crucial moment remains difficult for the former Moroccan international to accept.
“When I saw the Panenka penalty, I thought to myself, ‘No, you can’t do that now.’ He obviously didn’t do it on purpose. To say otherwise would be absurd. He could have become the hero, but he wanted to be the superhero,” added Saïss.
Despite his frustration, the former captain of the Atlas Lions hopes that this episode will serve as a lesson for Brahim Diaz for the rest of his career.
"I feel bad for him because it tarnishes his competition a bit. But I hope it will serve him well in the future," he concluded.
