On December 20th, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, publicly announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would no longer be held every two years. From now on, the continent's premier football competition will take place every four years. This change aims to harmonize the global football calendar, explained the South African head of CAF.

At a press conference this Monday, December 29th, the coach of Benin's Cheetahs harshly criticized the decision. "Personally, I'm frustrated to see that the AFCON will only take place every four years. This is my fourth AFCON. I've always loved the festive atmosphere. And having it every two years seemed normal, natural, and logical to me," declared the Franco-German coach.
He continued: "If it's every four years, it's going to be a shame. I think in two years there will be another one and then... It's a huge disappointment. I think it's a mistake and it's not good for African football."
Let us remember that the AFCON has been contested with the same periodicity since 1957.

Je conçois qu’aujourd’hui, avec les autres calendriers du football mondial, cette fréquence de 2 ans puisse poser problème, et pour plusieurs raisons , mais on discute : les Africains, à qui la gestion du football africain est confiée doivent en discuter, ensemble, en toute responsabilité , mais le Président de la CAF, Motsepe ne peut ni ne doit en décider, tout seul, car tout le monde semble surpris par pareille décision.

Vraiment nous en Afrique, ce qui nous manque ceux sont de vrais leaders. Des leaders qui savent dire non pour l'intérêt du football africain.
