"Franchement, je suis à fond derrière le Maroc" : Un patron de la CAF se lâche sur la finale Sénégal - Maroc
Interviewed by The Guardian, Samir Sobha, a member of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football and president of the Mauritian Football Federation, went to great lengths to "beg forgiveness" from Morocco. Following his interview with the British newspaper, he spoke to a Moroccan media outlet. And this time, he went even further.
The leader offered his full support to Morocco, suggesting that other federations had remained silent out of self-interest. "You know, in Africa, most federations are small, they don't have many resources and have to make do with what little they have. As you can imagine, they're not going to try to alienate certain African football officials who they might think could take action against them (...) I have absolutely nothing to gain. But that doesn't mean I'm going to stay silent. I'll tell you even more frankly: I'm fully behind Morocco and the Moroccan people," he insisted.
In his interview with The Guardian, Samir Sobha stated unequivocally that Morocco was the victim of an "injustice" in the final against Senegal, as all the players who left the field should have been cautioned, with Ismaila Sarr and El Hadji Malick being sent off for a second yellow card. His comments quickly sparked controversy, with many accusing him of bias in favor of Morocco, without mentioning the two blatant refereeing errors against Senegal, notably the goal unjustly disallowed for Ismaila Sarr in the final moments. He reiterated his remarks on the Moroccan website Medias24.
"I only told the truth, and I take full responsibility for everything that came out. Let's also make it clear that this is not a knee-jerk reaction. I really took the time to reread the rules, and they are clear [Law 12 of the Laws of the Game, editor's note]: a player must be warned if he deliberately leaves the field of play without the referee's permission. And that is exactly what happened during the final," says Samir Sobha.
