Hugo Salgado: l’entraîneur qui transforme les outsiders en champions cherche son prochain défi
A passion for basketball rooted since childhood, a winning spirit and a total commitment to helping players reach their full potential: these are the ingredients that have shaped Hugo Salgado, a respected and versatile coach, capable of success in both Europe and Africa.
A native of Porto, Portugal, Salgado has built a reputation as a tactician, motivator, and leader capable of transforming teams from underdogs into title contenders. After successful stints in Portugal, Iceland, Norway, the Czech Republic, and Cape Verde—where he led Kriol Star to a historic qualification for the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Playoffs, a first for a Cape Verdean club—the coach is ready for a new challenge. Open to new opportunities around the world, he also expressed interest in extending his career in Africa, a continent rich in talent and potential.
"I'm looking for an ambitious and serious project, whether at the club or national team level," he explains. "I want to work with an organization that fights every moment, that aims to win, and that believes in the importance of doing things right."
Salgado's basketball career began at just five years old, when he donned his first jersey for SC Vasco da Gama in his hometown. At 16, his curiosity and passion led him to the sidelines, where he began his coaching career. A graduate in journalism and marketing, he later decided to dedicate himself fully to coaching, cultivating a winning mentality at every step.
With experience gained in a wide variety of contexts, Salgado has established himself as an adaptable leader, capable of blending European tactical rigor with athleticism. His teams are distinguished by their discipline, fighting spirit, and mental toughness, with a strong human cohesion that he considers essential.
"Budget or squad size cannot be an excuse for not being competitive," he insists. "My teams know that we respect all opponents, but we are not afraid of anyone."
For him, this cohesion is also built off the field.
"We spend more time with the players than we do with our own families. So they become part of our family," he says.
A specialist in individual development, Salgado has helped numerous players move from modest contracts to major leagues, joining national teams and earning higher salaries. His work with Kriol Star has forever marked the history of Cape Verdean basketball, proving that, with the right support, even the most improbable dream can become a reality.
Convinced that African basketball is on the rise, he believes the BAL plays a major role in this progress and in the continent's influence. For him, the future lies in training young people and strengthening local championships.
"With organization, hard work and attention to detail, African basketball can reach the top," he says.
Always ready to jump on a plane for the right project, Salgado sets himself a simple goal: to win a championship... then another... and another.
To African clubs and federations, he sends a clear message:
“The road is long, but the potential is immense. I am ready to bring my hard work, adaptability, and winning mentality to help you reach your full potential and turn your dreams into reality.”
