"Je lui ai dit casse-toi de là" : L'anecdote de Souleymane Diawara sur Didier Deschamps
One of Olympique de Marseille's greatest defenders, Souleymane Diawara, might never have signed for OM. On RMC Sport's After Foot program, he recounted how he brushed off Didier Deschamps on the phone, thinking it was a joke by his friend Anthony Le Tallec.
“I played a joke on my friend Anthony Le Tallec because there was a club that wanted him. I think it was Marseille, too. I pretended to be the sporting director, calling him and saying 'we want you, we need you,' all that stuff. And he was totally into it, but at one point I burst out laughing. He recognized me, he insulted me, all that,” he said.
Ironically, later he received a call from Didier Deschamps, but thought it was Le Tallec returning the favor for his joke. "So when Deschamps called me, I immediately told him: 'Hey, get out of here, you think I didn't recognize you?' And in fact, it was Didier Deschamps. My agent called me and insulted me, saying: 'Are you crazy or what?! Didier Deschamps called you and you hung up on him!'"
"Well, afterwards I called him back and said: ''Coach, excuse me, I thought it was a joke from a friend of mine'', adds the Senegalese defender.
He will be forgiven by the current coach of France, who recruits him and manages him in Marseille for 3 years, from 2009 to 2012.
