Inde : la venue de Lionel Messi tourne à la confusion

Lionel Messi's visit to India, eagerly awaited by thousands of fans, took a chaotic turn this Saturday in Kolkata. Present in the capital of West Bengal for an event billed as exceptional, the Argentine star sparked a heated controversy after a major misunderstanding regarding the actual program of his visit.

Gathered en masse at Salt Lake Stadium, many fans of the Argentinian had hoped to witness a lengthy appearance, or even a sporting demonstration, from the football legend. But disappointment quickly spread through the stands when Messi merely offered a brief wave before leaving. This situation provoked anger and concern among the spectators. "The frustration was evident among the fans when they realized Messi wasn't going to play. He was only supposed to wave to the crowd before leaving," explained Rajeev Kumar, the state police chief.

In response to the widespread controversy, West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, announced an investigation to determine responsibility. Local authorities also intend to issue recommendations to prevent such incidents from recurring. The event organizer was arrested for "mismanagement" and ordered to refund tickets sold at 12,000 rupees, or approximately €113 each.

After the tumultuous episode in Kolkata, Lionel Messi traveled to Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana state, for the next leg of his trip to India. A more structured program is planned there, including an exhibition rugby sevens match. Messi will captain one team, while the opposing team will be symbolically led by the state's chief minister. For security reasons, the two figures will only participate in the match for the last ten minutes, according to the organizers.

Messi's Indian tour will also conclude with a football camp for children, followed by a parade and an honorary ceremony attended by several renowned players, including Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suárez. The event will take place at Uppal Stadium, which has been intentionally limited to 31,000 seats. Tickets are priced from 2,000 to 75,000 rupees, depending on the category and location.

Despite the incidents in Calcutta, the enthusiasm surrounding Lionel Messi remains intact in India, where the Argentine star continues to generate extraordinary popular fervor.
