"Cela n'a pas été facile" : Pape Thiaw s’explique sur l’absence de Malang Sarr dans sa liste
Senegal's national team coach, Pape Thiaw, has shed light on Malang Sarr's absence from his squad for the upcoming World Cup. When questioned about the defender, who has had a remarkable season and was recently named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Year, the Senegalese coach acknowledged the difficulty of certain choices while fully standing by his decisions.
“It wasn’t easy,” Pape Thiaw began, emphasizing the human aspect involved in selecting a group to represent the national team. “When you have affection for certain players and you know they won’t be with us for this World Cup, it’s a difficult decision,” he explained.
The Lions' coach nevertheless reminded everyone that his role requires him to make sometimes difficult decisions in the collective interest. "When I put on the coach's hat, it's a different reality. I had my convictions and I made choices that I fully stand by," he stated.
Regarding Malang Sarr specifically, Pape Thiaw was full of praise. He commended the defender's qualities and revealed that he had spoken with him directly. "He's an excellent player. I had the opportunity to talk with him. He's a disciplined young man whom I wanted to personally congratulate on his remarkable season," he said.
Despite this recognition, the coach believes that the demands of a global competition require strategic choices. According to him, the selected squad was carefully chosen to ensure optimal balance across all areas of the game.
“We have assembled a balanced, coherent and well-thought-out group, capable of meeting the demands of a World Cup, a very high-level, intense and particularly long competition,” concluded Pape Thiaw.
