JOJ Dakar-2026 : Un "Clean Up Day" à Ngor pour promouvoir l’héritage environnemental des Jeux

To mark the return to Dakar of the ship "Plastic Odyssey", after a three-year global expedition dedicated to the fight against plastic pollution, the Organising Committee of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (COJOJ) organised a day of action and environmental awareness, on Saturday 7 February, at Ngor beach.

This initiative, called "Clean Up Day," represents a step in the COJOJ's commitment to ocean protection. The event aimed to be a true hub for environmental education, bringing together young people, community stakeholders, and committed partners around the challenges related to plastic waste management.

Sokhna Aïcha Thiam, Head of Environmental Excellence at the Dakar 2026 Organizing Committee, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative. "This initiative aligns with our circular economy strategies. For the past year, we have been working with 'Plastic Odyssey,' which is now a partner of the Organizing Committee," she explained.

The committee took advantage of this day to inform the public about the Youth Olympic Games, while highlighting the actions taken to integrate sustainability into the organization of the event.

According to Ms. Thiam, raising awareness among young people about plastic use and the opportunities offered by waste recycling is a central focus of this initiative. The choice of Ngor Bay, an iconic tourist site, is also significant. "We want to ensure the sustainability of these activities beyond the Games. In terms of legacy, it is essential for us to preserve this kind of site," she added.

With the Youth Olympic Games approaching, starting on October 31, 2026, the Organizing Committee for the Youth Olympic Games (COJOJ) intends to begin preparations now for welcoming the thousands of visitors expected in Dakar. "We want Dakar and Senegal to welcome their guests to a clean and beautiful country," emphasized Sokhna Aïcha Thiam.

The official also praised the strong turnout observed during the day, marked by the active participation of young people and local communities. "Awareness-raising begins with children. Mobilizing them today and showing them the impact of our actions is fundamental," she concluded.
