Crowned Spanish champions for the second consecutive season, FC Barcelona continues to close the gap with its eternal rival, Real Madrid, in La Liga history. Long dominated in the Spanish league standings, the Catalan club is now just seven titles behind Los Blancos. This spectacular resurgence, which began in the 1990s, seems to be taking on a new dimension under the leadership of Hansi Flick.

For decades, Real Madrid reigned supreme over Spanish football. In 1990, propelled by the legendary generation of Butragueño, Michel, Juanito, and Sanchis, the Madrid club already boasted 25 Spanish league titles, compared to just 10 for Barça. Fifteen titles separated the two giants, a gap that seemed impossible to close.

But thirty-six years later, the landscape has changed dramatically. With their title win in 2026, FC Barcelona now boasts 29 La Liga titles, compared to Real Madrid's 36. The gap remains significant, but it is no longer insurmountable. More than ever, the Blaugrana seem capable of challenging Real Madrid's historic supremacy.

The first major turning point came in the early 1990s with the arrival of Dutch coach Johan Cruyff. At the helm of the famous "Dream Team," the Dutchman led Barça to four consecutive titles between 1991 and 1994. This pivotal period transformed the Catalan club into a global benchmark for attacking football and possession-based play.

This first victory already allows Barça to reduce part of its historical gap with Real Madrid.

The second major wave came in the mid-2000s. Led successively by Ronaldinho, then Pep Guardiola, and finally Lionel Messi, the Catalan club crushed the domestic competition. Between 2005 and 2019, Barça won 10 La Liga titles in just 15 seasons.

During this period, Real Madrid shone brightest on the European stage, while domestic dominance clearly leaned towards Catalonia. It was at this point that the historical gap truly began to close.

The arrival of Hansi Flick could well mark the beginning of a third victorious era for Barça. The German coach has just won two consecutive Spanish league titles and, above all, has demonstrated clear dominance in recent Clásicos.

With six wins in the last seven encounters against Real Madrid, the German coach seems to have found the recipe to unsettle the White House, both tactically and mentally.

Above all, Barça now relies on a particularly promising young generation. Players like Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Marc Bernal, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Pedri, and Joan Garcia embody the future of the Catalan club.

If this young generation confirms its immense potential in the coming seasons, Barça could quickly catch up with Real Madrid at the top of Spanish football. More than just a contender, the Catalan club now appears as the main candidate for a lasting reconquest of the national throne.
