Les Lions qui ne renoncent jamais : l'histoire de la sélection du Sénégal

Nothing was handed to the Senegalese national team right away. The team was built up over decades. It fell, got back up, and continued to believe — until it forced the whole world to speak of the "Lions of Teranga" with respect.

The beginning of a great story

The Senegalese Football Federation was founded in 1960, the same year the country gained its independence. The Lions were young, ambitious, and audacious, and in their first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1965, they finished in fourth place. For a young team, it was a promising start. But what followed was more difficult: major tournaments often eluded Senegal, and stability was a long time coming.

At that time, one of the great symbols of Senegalese football was Jules Bocandé. He became the first player from the country to finish as top scorer in the French Ligue 1. He proved to all of Africa that a Senegalese player could dominate in Europe. And he showed his country that the European heights were within reach.

2002: The year Senegal entered the annals of history

The real turning point came in 2002, on two fronts simultaneously. First, Senegal reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, before losing to Cameroon on penalties. On that day, the decisive attempt eluded captain Aliou Cissé. Such a defeat could have broken the team. On the contrary, it made them even hungrier.

A few months later, Senegal made its debut at the Globe Cup in Japan and Korea, writing one of the most glorious chapters in the history of African football. In the opening match, the Lions faced France, the reigning world champions. El-Hadji Diouf sliced through the defense, and then Pape Bouba Diop's goal seemed to stop time: Senegal had just won. From Dakar to Johannesburg, an entire continent celebrated that day. The team reached the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Turkey. But the Lions of Teranga had already proven the most important thing: they were a force to be reckoned with. Bruno Metsu had built a team that feared no big name, and it showed in every match.

The Lions' golden generation

After the epic run of 2002, a more difficult period followed. Senegal missed the next three editions of the Globe Cup, in 2006, 2010, and 2014. They returned in 2018, but the team exited the group stage on fair play, finishing behind Japan in yellow cards. Their talent, however, hadn't disappeared. It was growing, maturing, and waiting for its moment.

And that time has come. Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, Édouard Mendy, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Ismaïla Sarr – a generation that makes an entire country proud. At its head, Aliou Cissé, the same captain who missed his shot in 2002. Years later, he returned to the national team as coach, and history has given him a second chance.

In 2019, Senegal narrowly lost to Algeria in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

But in February 2022, in Cameroon, everything finally fell into place: a final against Egypt, a penalty shootout, and this time, the Lions of Teranga held their nerve. For the first time in its history, Senegal became African champion. Aliou Cissé was named the continent's best coach by CAF, and every Senegalese knew what that moment meant for the entire country. Four years later, continental success was confirmed with a new coach, Pape Thiaw. A triumph that must now serve as a starting point for the major tournament of 2026.

The next page is already being written.

During the major 2022 tournament in Qatar, Senegal once again advanced from their group and reached the round of 16, without Mané but carried by their character.

Now, all eyes are on the 2026 tournament. Sadio Mané is back, joined by Nicolas Jackson, Ismaïla Sarr, and a new generation eager to prove their worth. The group is tough: France, Norway, and Iraq. But Senegal has already beaten France, and no one has forgotten Pape Bouba Diop's goal.
