In the wake of the national euphoria sparked by the Lions' victory, the Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) published a statement on January 28, 2026, mixing sporting congratulations, a call for republican unity, and sharp criticism of the ruling power.
In its statement, the FDR (Front for the Defense of the Republic) expressed its "joy following the resounding victory" of the national team, praising a performance that has earned Senegal a "second star" and, in its view, solidified the country's position among the leaders of African football. The front lauded the "fighting spirit, courage, discipline, and consistency" of the Lions, presenting them as a role model for Senegalese youth.
The political movement also highlighted a moment of national unity, welcoming the joint presence of opposition forces at the players' reception ceremony at the Presidential Palace. This gesture, described as embodying the "republican spirit," allowed, according to the FDR, for "setting aside differences" for the duration of this national tribute.
While reiterating its "frank, strong, and unwavering support" for the Senegalese Football Federation, its coaching staff, and its players, the FDR nevertheless believes that this "festive interlude" cannot overshadow the "recurring difficulties" faced by the population. The Front deplores what it considers the "indifference of an incompetent government" incapable, in its view, of addressing the essential concerns of its citizens.
On the political and legal front, the FDR denounces "the continued judicial harassment of opponents" and cites in particular the cases of Lansana Kanté, regional head of Taxawu Senegaal in Tambacounda, MP Farba Ngom, Minister Pape Malick Ndour, as well as "numerous other compatriots" whom it considers to be detained "in complete arbitrariness." The front affirms its solidarity with these individuals, whom it describes as "political prisoners," and calls on Senegalese citizens for "unwavering mobilization" against what it considers "illegal repression."
The statement also addresses the "repeated and shameful attacks" against institutions, specifically mentioning criticisms of the judiciary attributed to the Prime Minister "from abroad."
In conclusion, the FDR launches a collective appeal: "Demand the release of those unjustly arrested," "respect for democratic freedoms," and "defense of the Republic and the Constitution."
This statement, published amid popular jubilation, illustrates the FDR's desire to combine sporting tribute, a message of national unity and political denunciation.
