Marc Brys limogé, Onana et Aboubakar, non sélectionnés pour la CAN : Samuel Eto’o en mode règlement de comptes ?
It's an open secret. Samuel Eto'o was re-elected as head of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot) during the elective General Assembly held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, in Mbankomo. The former Indomitable Lion was the only candidate. Following his re-election, the FC Barcelona legend quickly dismissed national team coach Marc Brys, with whom he had a strained relationship. Brys, in fact, never recognized Eto'o's authority and even criticized him on occasion.
Samuel Eto'o cited several reasons to justify his dismissal, including Cameroon's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
"My heart is heavy."
Last Saturday, the day of his re-election as head of Fécafoot, the native of Yaoundé was already upset by the absence of the Indomitable Lions at this great event of world football.
"You have noticed, as I have, that Cameroon, the best country, for me, in terms of football, will not be at the biggest event in football. The first World Cup, with 48 teams. It breaks my heart to think that for this first World Cup, the country of Roger Milla, Patrick Mboma, Rigobert Song, and Emmanuel Kundé will not be there, but it is a truth," said Samuel Eto'o.
The sacking of the coach 48 hours later was therefore not a surprise. What is, however, a major surprise is the exclusion of certain key players from the Indomitable Lions.
Indeed, former Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana, and Indomitable Lions captain Vincent Aboubakar, are not in the list of 28 players called up by new coach David Pagou to compete in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
"No player will be above Cameroon anymore."
One wonders if Eto'o isn't behind the exclusion of these two players. It's worth remembering that the current Trabzonspor goalkeeper recently criticized his management in a TikTok live stream.
Vincent Aboubakar is considered a supporter of Marc Brys, according to several concurring sources.
.
Last Saturday, Samuel Eto'o clearly stated that no "player will (from now on) be above Cameroon".
