Moroccan defender Romain Saïss officially announced his international retirement on Monday, February 23. At 35, the former captain of the Atlas Lions brings to a close a rich and memorable career with the national team, just months before the next World Cup.
In an emotional message posted on Instagram, Saïss announced his decision in powerful terms. "Today, I close the most beautiful chapter of my football life. After careful consideration, it is with immense emotion that I announce my international retirement," he wrote, paying tribute to a career shaped by passion and commitment.
The former captain spoke at length about the deep attachment he feels to the Moroccan national team. "Wearing the colors of Morocco will remain the greatest honor of my career. This jersey transcends the realm of sport: it's a story of roots, family, and heart," he confided, evoking the pride and sense of responsibility he feels with each appearance under the national flag.
Romain Saïss made sure to thank everyone who had supported him throughout his international career: his teammates, the various national team coaches and their staff, the medical teams, and the fans. "Your unwavering support is the driving force that pushes us to excel match after match," he emphasized, paying tribute to the Moroccan public.
The player also expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI, highlighting the royal vision and the work of the Federation, which have enabled Morocco to develop modern infrastructure and training that is now recognized on the world stage.
With 86 caps, Saïss has climbed every rung of the ladder since his first call-up in 2012, becoming an indispensable pillar of the defense. A key player in the team managed by Walid Regragui, he was one of the architects of Morocco's historic run to the 2022 World Cup, before leaving the semi-final against France due to injury.
During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted on home soil, the defender played only 18 minutes in the opening match against Comoros, a further sign that his time there was coming to an end. While he is leaving the international stage, Romain Saïss promises to remain a staunch supporter of the national team. "I'm leaving the national team, but I will always be a Lion," he concluded.
